When I created Contiguous, I wanted to transform the hidden science of ultra macro photography into a quiet cosmic ballet. Suspended within a glass bowl of soapy water, olive oil, glycerin, and water, these luminous bubbles gathered in intimate formation, each one touching, pressing, and orbiting the next as though bound by an invisible law of attraction. Their arrangement felt celestial to me, like neighboring planets held in delicate alignment, contiguous in both distance and design.
What gives this abstract image its dreamlike power is the science behind soap bubbles themselves. A bubble forms when a thin film of water is trapped between layers of soap molecules, while glycerin slows evaporation and helps the structure endure long enough for intricate patterns to emerge. The olive oil introduced soft separation, density shifts, and rounded forms, deepening the composition with layered texture and fluid geometry. In this image, I saw chemistry become visual poetry.
I captured the photograph with a blue magazine placed beneath the glass bowl, allowing the frame to glow with radiant sapphire, cyan, and pale ivory tones. Those cool blues flooded the composition with atmospheric depth, while the creamy circular forms drifted across the surface like illuminated spheres in orbit. The immense detail revealed subtle gradients, velvety shadows, and polished highlights, giving every bubble a smooth, glasslike presence.
To me, Contiguous is a celebration of texture, color, and scientific beauty at a scale the naked eye rarely notices. It is my fine art study in connection, where every bubble seems to lean into the next, proving that even the smallest forms in nature can create a universe of harmony.
