Flummox is one of my most eccentric and boundary-pushing pieces in the realm of macro abstract photography. Inspired by the very definition of its name, this artwork embraces perplexity and visual ambiguity, challenging the viewer to surrender to disorientation and discover their own meaning within the chaos. Flummox refuses to offer a clear focal point, captured from a quartz crystal and composed of approximately 100 meticulously stacked images. Instead, it leads the eyes on a restless journey through layered textures, refracted light, and unpredictable angles.
Every viewer sees something different: shimmering oceans, glowing car headlights, ancient relics, chalky landscapes, interstellar vistas, or dense jungles. This multi-interpretive nature transforms Flummox into a deeply personal visual experience. The chaotic yet hypnotic interplay of overlapping crystal protrusions creates a three-dimensional illusion, drawing inspiration from its sibling piece, Prismatic Shards. This second iteration, shot from an alternate angle, amplifies the sense of surreal depth.
