Lycan’s Moon originated during the 2019 Christmas season, a pivotal period when I was beginning to uncover my unique voice in macro photography. On a crisp winter night in downtown Oklahoma City, while admiring holiday lights glowing against the cold, I stumbled upon a radiant cluster of red Christmas bulbs. Fueled by my eccentric imagination, I captured a high-magnification image of a single light tip, its intense bokeh effect creating a surreal and dreamlike visual. To my surprise, this spontaneous photograph would become one of my macro photography journey's most striking early explorations.
Fast-forward to 2024. After five years of focused experimentation and technical refinement, I revisited this image with the intent of transforming it into something more conceptual: a retrospective fine art reinterpretation steeped in mythology and visual storytelling. Where the original glowed with vivid multicolored hues resembling a gas giant planet, this new black-and-white rendition channels the haunting allure of lunar mythology.
Inspired by the legends of Lycans, mythical werewolf beings with superhuman strength, intellect, and speed, I envisioned the image as a spectral moon cloaked in swirling haze. The supernatural creatures of folklore are said to transform involuntarily under a full moon, hunting with primal ferocity and chilling howls that echo through the night. This piece, abstract as it may seem, now serves as a symbolic macro moonscape crafted not from nature’s night sky but from the glow of a humble Christmas light.
