When I created Racing Stripes, I was immediately struck by how this blue longwing butterfly looked less like an insect and more like a finely engineered machine of nature. In this macro photograph, its wings stretch outward with sleek precision, bearing bold red markings that resemble the racing stripes of a high-performance vehicle. That visual parallel gave the image its title and its energy.
The butterfly’s color is what first catches attention. Deep sapphire and electric blue flood the wings with a luminous richness, while the vivid red bands cut across the surface like streaks of speed and fire. Dark outer edges frame the composition, adding contrast and making the brilliant colors feel even more intense.
